An oil change is probably the most routine service you can perform on your vehicle. It's always a good idea to use a quality motor oil. Because newer model engines have smaller internal clearance specifications, they may require a thinner multi-viscosity oil (5W-30). You don't want your new clean oil going through a dirty oil filter so always install a new oil filter. It's also a good idea to inspect the air filters and lubricate any suspension zirc fittings if you can.
Transmission maintenance service should be performed at approximately every 30,000 miles on most cars. This service is usually best done by a professional service facility because they can put your vehicle on a hoist. Make sure the technician installs a new pan gasket and trans filter whenever possible. If you notice any sludge or metalic debris in the pan, you could have more serious problems such as slipping and improper shift points. Remenber: used transmission oil is considered "hazardous waste" and should be disposed of properly.
Most cars should have their tires rotated every 5,000 miles. This is a good time to check the wheel balance and inspect the brake lining. If your brake lining is badly worn, new brake pads or shoes should be installed so as not to cause further damage to rotors or drums. Ceramic disk brake pads are becoming available for many applications. This type of pad offers quieter stopping performance and causes less wear on your brake rotors. If your brake pedal seems to sink to the floorboard while you're at a stop sign, you may have a bad master cylinder. Check the brake fluid for any contamination and check for any leakage around the brake master cylinder. Also check your wheel cylinders for any abnormal moisture. Bad brakes can be dangerous so make sure your brake system is in good condition.
Most front wheel drive vehicles have 2 drive axle shafts. These axles have protective boots which cover the constant-velocity joints. Be sure to inspect the condition of these boots any time you have to raise your vehicle on a hoist. If they are broken or cracked, replace them before the constant-velocity joints become contaminated with dirt. A bad axle will usually cause a clicking sound while turning, like a loose hub cap . Replacing c/v boots and axles requires special tools. This repair should be performed by an expert technician.
If you're vehicle starts to run rough and doesn't seem to have the pep it used to, it may be time for a tune-up. If your vehicle is fuel injected, you should have the fuel injection system serviced periodically. Check your owners manual. This type of service is usually best performed when you have your vehicle tuned up. Because most services of this type require special cleaning chemicals, it is a good idea to change your spark plugs and fuel filter afterwards. Check your air filters and replace them if they are dirty. A clean filter will improve engine performance and gas mileage. You should notice a distinct difference in the way your vehicle performs afterwards.
Automotive air conditioning maintenance requires special tools. Be advised of new laws which prohibit the venting of freon into the atmosphere. If your air conditioner doesn't cool like it should, you may have a freon leak. Have the A/C system tested and fix any leaks before they cause further damage to the A/C system. Air conditioning repairs can be costly. Be sure to turn on the air conditioner periodically. This helps lubricate the seals and o-rings that deteriorate with age.
